The Lewa Safari Marathon has raised over KSh1.3 billion since the event’s inception in 2000 according to the organisers.
Organised by Tusk in partnership with Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, the marathon has become one of Africa’s most impactful conservation fundraising initiatives, directly contributing to measurable gains in biodiversity and livelihoods.
Funds raised through the marathon have had a significant impact on populations of critically endangered species such as Hawksbill turtles and Grevy’s zebras, increasing their numbers. Rhino numbers have grown in protected areas.
Proceeds have funded more than 40,000 clinic visits, Supported education programmes in local schools and enabled rural enterprises, including pastoralist initiatives and women-led businesses.
